Debra Scala Giokas ‘87 is pleased to announce the publication and release of her new book “Unraveling Yarns About The First Ladies:  A Book To Get Kids Hooked on History.”  This is Deborah’s second book. She is a marketing communications professional and is also a member of the Society of Book Writers and Illustrators.  The book will be published and available on June 2, 2022.  Debra will give a virtual talk at the James Madison Museum of Orange County on May 20 at 6:00pm in celebration of Dolley Madison’s birthday, titled  “Unraveling Yarns About the First Ladies.”

Victoria Bonanni ‘74, after retiring from a 35-year writing career, having her own 1-person company, and not working for 11 years, returned to work in 2017 as a sales associate and front cashier for CVS Health at a 24/7 store in her town. Helana Darwin ’16, ’20’s first book is the #1 New Release in Gender Studies on Amazon. “Redoing Gender: How Nonbinary Gender Contributes toward Social Change” is based on her dissertation within the Sociology department. Redoing Gender analyzes the labor of nonbinary outness and advances efforts to theorize social change. Written for a general readership, Redoing Gender aims to increase cisgender readers’ empathy for nonbinary people and willingness to engage as allies in the so-called “gender revolution.”

Ryan Gallagher ‘12 has relocated from Connecticut, and was recently hired at the South Carolina environmental agency in the bureau of air quality. I relocated from Connecticut to Columbia, South Carolina in fall 2019.  He is currently a meteorologist.

Brendan Shea DMA ’17 and Yerin Kim DMA ’18  are in a violin/piano duo and have released their first studio album next month.  It’s titled “The Sound and the Fury”, and was released on 11/12/21 on the Blue Griffin label.  Yerin is an assistant professor of piano at Central Washington University.

Yan Leyfman ’11, as a second author, wrote an institutional retrospective analysis with guideline changing recommendations performed at MSKCC in the largest study in the literature for low grade marginal zone lymphoma of the lung was published in the journal, Blood Advances . This work was recognized as one of the top 200 research projects for 2019 at the 2019 ASH Annual Meeting and presented as a virtual presentation at the 2020 ASCO Medical Student Virtual Research Symposium. In addition, he wrote a book chapter about our model for SARS-CoV-2 and COVI-Flu that was published in July 2021.  Yan presented during the 2021 American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Annual Meeting, and was selected in June of 2021 as one of 49 trainees to present at the 2021 ASCO medical student and resident abstract forum about his cancer COVID mechanism.  He established an international research mentorship program to elevate the skillset of medical students and help them reach their potential in their specialty of interest and is the ASTCT Educational Committee Associate Director of CAR T Cell Webinar Series, helping to develop a course to educate the public about immunotherapeutic innovations and a member of Education Committee (youngest trainee ever named)  There was a podcast about Leyfman was recently released about his journey, Chernobyl and COVID-19. Rachael Eyler ‘19 was featured prominently in a story about how reporters prepare for and handle hostility from the public in the course of doing their jobs. The story ran in the winter issue of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Quill Magazine. Eyler is a weekend anchor and investigative reporter at WJFW, an NBC affiliate station in Wisconsin. Last fall, her JRN 490 project was a finalist for the Online Journalism Association’s David Teeuwen Student Journalism Award.

Ann Lin ’18 and Chris Giuliano ’18 were recently spotlighted in an article by Forbes  magazine for research conducted to explore the effectiveness of cancer drugs.

Ana Llácer ’11 directed and produced an award-winning documentary about the water crisis Bolivia faced between 2016 and 2017. “UMA: A Water Crisis in Bolivia” tells the story of three indigenous communities and their fight to protect their water supplies from mining amid a devastating drought.

Guneet K. Singh ‘19 graduated from the NBC Page Program in early 2021 and began working as a Development Assistant at Jimmy Fallon’s production company, Electric Hot Dog, assisting with the creation of both scripted and unscripted content primarily for NBC. 

Greg Wehner ‘14 started a new job in February as a staff writer for Ocean City Today in Ocean City, MD where he is building a better digital presence for the outlet. In addition, Wehner recently graduated from Quinnipiac University with a Master’s Degree in Interactive Media and Communications.

Jay Hanas, PhD ’81 and his laboratory recently published a paper in the journal Brain Sciences entitled “Distinguishing Alzheimer’s Disease Patients and Biochemical Phenotype Analysis using a Novel Serum Profiling Platform: Potential Involvement of the VWF/ADAMTS13 Axis”.  The paper stresses the importance of maintaining adequate blood flow in the brain to help prevent or ameliorate Alzheimer’s disease.  Jay is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.  Read more here.  

Lori Reichel ‘88 wrote an award winning book titled Common Questions Children Ask About Puberty , started the Puberty Prof Podcast this past January, and created an app called TALK Puberty to guide puberty talks (just in time for spring puberty talks). Mary Beth (Olbrych) Medley ’70 is the 2021 SSK fest recipient.  She was recognized in a condensed virtual ceremony on Friday, April 23rd at 1pm on zoom.  She had a long career in music and as a student at SBU, brought many of the big artists to play.

Debra Scala Giokas ’87 authored a children’s book, celebrating Clair McCardell, the American designer who changed fashion culture.  The book will be available on May 24 (which would have been McCardell’s 116th birthday), a picture book for children ages 6 through 10, titled “Claire: The Little Girl Who Climbed to the Top and Changed the Way Women Dress.  The pen and ink picture book illuminates the fashion icon’s story and will empower little girls.

Hao Huang DMA ’85 was recently interviewed by NowThis about his podcast “Blood on Gold Mountain,” following a recent publication in The Washington Post. His team was also awarded the UCLA Chancellor’s Arts Initiative Award to present “The Los Angeles Chinatown Massacre: 150-year Commemorative Performance and Dialogue”, a live performance in LA on October 24, 2021.

Wei Yin, PhD ‘04, Associate Professor and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), has been appointed Associate Dean for Diversity and Outreach for the Stony Brook University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). An alumna of the College, Professor Yin received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Stony Brook in 2004.

Emil Karolak ’10 has started his own business, Karolak Woodworks, going into the arts; fine woodcrafts.  “As a young boy I had my father, an architect, and grandfather, an ex aerospace engineer for Grumman, teaching me things such as reading and creating scaled floor plans and drawings, but also to build things with my hands. I am going to start making bespoke furniture pieces, made to heirloom quality.”

Antonio Xu Liu ’17 recently published an op-ed about the intersection of LGBTQ+ and immigration equality from the perspective of me and my husband’s marriage.

In February 2021, in a Virtual Special Event for The Gilmore, she will present the world premiere of Marc-André Hamelin’s Suite à l’ancienne, which she commissioned with funding from the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival.  She got married in May 2019.

Isai Jess Muñoz ’10 is pleased to share that the new recording of “Visca L’Amor: Catalan Art Songs of the 20th and 21st Centuries,” featuring tenor Isaí Jess Muñoz (DMA Voice Performance ‘10) and pianist Oksana Glouchko (DMA Piano Performance ’11), was released on Bridge Records January 15, 2021. This recording of 20th and 21st century Catalan composers showcases six song cycles by Frederico Mompou, the only well-known figure among them, as well as rarely heard works by Eduard Toldrà, Joan Comellas, Ricard LaMotte de Grignon, Narcís Bonet, and a world premiere recording of a new commission by living Catalonian composer, Elisenda Fábregas.  Dr. Muñoz now serves as associate professor of voice and opera at the University of Delaware and as vice president of the National Opera Association. 

Cara O’Connor PhD ’05, ’16, ’17, assistant professor of social sciences for the Borough of Manhattan Community College, has received the Distinguished Teaching Award for 2020.  She is currently working on a book-length project tentatively titled “Unraveling Respect,” which includes chapters on amour-propre, respectability politics, primary goods and disability rights. O’Connor currently co-directs the Society for Women in Philosophy-New York City (SWIP-NYC).

Donovan Alexis ’20, hotel administrator at the Holiday Inn Express, has produced a two-minute commercial that highlights not only the best of the hotel, but the numerous activities and sites in the Three Village area.  The commercial took four days of shooting and includes drone shots of the Old Field Lighthouse, Avalon Park and Preserve, Stony Brook Village and the Port Jefferson waterfront.

Yan Leyfman MD ’11, ‘18 has worked during the pandemic to connect several hospitals and frontline workers with the resources to acquire PPE. As a volunteer with the Penn State COVID-19 Engineering Group, he worked to devise novel strategies of disinfection to prolong the life of PPE and helped to write a summary of their findings. He also volunteered with COVID-19 patients both locally, nationally and internationally, giving talks about the pandemic in multiple languages. Additionally, Yan was recruited to join the Global COVID-19 Taskforce to serve as a Special Advisor for Immunology, Oncology and Cellular Therapeutics, where he worked to devise solutions and shape policy to improve survival outcomes. This resulted in one of the largest international anthologies about COVID-19, published in the Journal of Global Infectious Disease adding novel perspectives about the virus to the literature. Yan was made Director of the Immunology Group, where he lead an international cohort of MDs, PhDs, and MD-PhDs that produced the first cohesive mechanism of action for SARS-CoV-2, a new prognostic assay to predict patient outcomes, and presented the first synergistic paradigm between the flu and SARS-CoV-2, termed “COVI-Flu”, and model along with therapeutic interventions and preventative strategies for both. Yan was recognized for research excellence by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and as a 2020 New York State & City Manhattan Hero for his community service and research contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The research for this publication was conducted while she served as a Visiting Researcher at Boston University Center for Practical Theology, School of Theology, with financial support from The Louisville Institute’s Project Grant for Researchers. Gail is a Priest Associate at The Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Santa Rosa, CA, where she lives with her husband Robert.

John Cona ’87 has t wo young adult fantasy-adventure novels coming out in 2020. The first one launched on June 30 under the pen name Prof. WW Marplot and includes many scenes at Stony Brook University.

Genevieve Sly Crane ’12 has been awarded the Whiting Award, based on the early accomplishment and the promise of great work to come for her book, Sorority.   She teaches in the Creative Writing and Literature BFA program at Stony Brook.  Sorority  (Scout Press, 2018) is her first publication.

Dr. Yan Leyfman ’11 was recruited by the Global COVID-19 Taskforce to serve as a special adviser for Immunology, Oncology and Novel Therapeutics and to lead the Immunology Group in devising solutions and shaping policy to improve survival outcomes. Most recently, he has been elected to serve as a member of American Society for Transplantation & Cellular Therapy’s (ASTCT) Educational Committee to develop novel educational opportunities for fellows, residents, and medical students in hopes of inspiring them to pursue careers in transplant and oncology, respectively.  Yan was chosen to present during The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Virtual Medical Student Research Symposium on June 30, 2020 highlighting the work of 45 medical students across the US. He delivered a brief presentation on new treatment recommendations for the management of a rare type of lymphoma of the lung. 

Daniel Kivatinos ’01, ‘02 and Michael Nusimow ’01, co-founders of DrChrono, have teamed up with Cognition IP to help it draft new patent applications that will focus on machine learning technology.  In May, DrChrono launched a fully integrated telemedicine app exclusively to its network of providers and is First EHR to build a telemedicine physician marketplace for patients.  Most recently, the company has partnered with Ricoh to automatically scan patient ID, medical documentation and referrals, helping patients for a seamless process into the DrChrono EHR.

Ninrav Makwana MD ’07 has joined Rhode Island Medical Imaging as a radiologist.  Dr. Makwana did his residency at Rhode Island Hospital in the Brown Department of Diagnostic Imaging as well as an internship in the Brown Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Makwana’s teaching experience includes presentations given to the Brown University Department of Diagnostic Imaging. 

George J. Meyer, Esq. ’74, ’78, co-chair of the shareholder and construction industry group at the firm of Carlton Fields, has been appointed to the American College of Construction Lawyers’ (ACCL) Board of Governors.

Jennifer Muilenburg ’07 graduated the Nurse Practitioner program in 2007 and has recently ventured as a new business owner.   She is a nurse practitioner and acupuncturist with an office located in Stony Brook Medical Park, Just Enjoy Life Acupuncture And Wellness Center.   

Caitlin Mullen ‘17 received rave reviews for her first novel, Please See Us .  She has been the recipient of fellowships and residencies from the Saltonstall Foundation and the Vermont Studio Center.  The New York Times review, coupled with NPR ’s Books to Read during the Pandemic has made Caitlin’s book a must read this spring.  

Safa Naibzada ‘14 is a sixth grade science teacher at SA Bronx Middle School and won an award for Achievement, which recognizes educators who, through their outstanding instruction, have led their students to exceptional academic growth. She says her decision to pursue education stems from her experience as a teaching assistant at Stony Brook while majoring in History — as well as what she learned from her parents’ experiences: “As immigrants, my parents were able to build a wonderful life here due to the education they received in their home country. I always had a passion to share that same opportunity with young people.” 

Atabek Nazirovbout ’98 was appointed to become a head of the Capital Markets Development Agency in Uzbekistan, which is also a securities market regulator. The goal of the agency is to develop a functioning domestic capital market system, to support economic growth, and the wide reform agenda promoted by the President Mirziyoyev.

Edith Ohadekwe ’02 became a registered nurse and worked in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She relocated to the city of London in England, UK where she attended graduate school and earned a Master of Science degree in Health Management). Since then, she got married, is a mother of two young children and has been working in England’s National Health Service (NHS) for 11 years as a manager of several outpatient services and an inpatient ward/unit.

Sofia Varino, PhD ’14, ’17 will be a postdoc fellow at the Minor Cosmopolitanisms research training group in the department of English and American Studies at Potsdam University, in cooperation with Humboldt University and Freie University, in Berlin, Germany.  She will be working on her new book on multispecies genealogies of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as supervising doctoral candidates and collaborating with other researchers in the group

Dr. Phyllis Zagano’s ‘79 new book, Women: Icons of Christ is a groundbreaking review of the sacramental ministry of women throughout Christian history and the answer to current Catholic disciplinary objections to restoring women to the ordained Diaconate . Dr. Zagano was appointed to the Pontifical Commission for the Study of the Diaconate of Women in 2016.

Dominik Biezonski ’04 has earned his PhD from UMass, performed post-doctoral research at Harvard and Columbia and became an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia.  He turned to professional grant writing for an HHMI-supported lab at Rockefeller University and is currently the Senior Scientific Grant Writer for the entire New York Genome Center.  He has also had a prolific music career, playing sold out shows in NYC and releasing 2 full-length albums and many more singles and got married recently.  

Steve Bilzi ’72 is an apple consultant, business and real estate concerns, former Chairman for the local Board of Education and held several North Carolina state and local appointments in technology, education and business.  He is a proud father of five children, and proud grandfather of five grandchildren.

Howard Blue ’63 has been writing since retiring from teaching high school history.  His first book, “Words of War,” a book about U.S. radio during World War II, came out in 2002.  He writes occasionally for a local newspaper in Columbia County, New York. Most recently, he writes for the Rheinstrom Community Foundation, working on a biography of the late Carroll Rheinstrom.   

Gail (Erickson) Cafferata ’66, ’70 recently published a book The Last Pastor: Faithfully Leading a Closing Church (Westminster John Knox Press, 2020).  She served as a medical sociologist at Episcopal Divinity School for nearly 25 years before ordination as an Episcopal priest. She served a Northern California congregation for nine years before it closed in 2012, writing the book based on a national study of pastors who had similar experiences and her personal experience.

Albert Kalter ’72, is owner and chiropractor for Braintree Chiropractic.  As his practice career ages, his involvement in professional development with the board he has served since 1987 continues. He now serves as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Chiropractic Society, Inc. 

Sue Kern ’73 is the Family Law Information Center Attorney at Fresno Superior Court in Fresno, CA. Together with her husband and two adult children, they operate an organic farm, a local natural food market, and run the school garden program at their local elementary school.  She is on the Board of Directors of Centro La Familia Advocacy, Madera Coalition for Community Justice, the Ecological Farming Association and KFCF/Fresno Free College Foundation Radio Station.

Judy Levin-Charns ’73 retired as the assistant superintendent for student services in the Newton, MA public schools in June 2016.   She is currently the program coordinator for the graduate program in special education administration at Bay Path University in East Longmeadow, MA.

Rosalie Machalow ’79 is a retired nurse practitioner in adult psychiatry.  She is married 43 years to fellow alumnus Robert Allen Machalow, who passed away suddenly this past May.  She has two children, Deborah ’12 an attorney in Wisconsin and Charles, a software engineer in California.

Ray W. Russell ’72, retired recently after a successful 37.5 year career with The Aerospace Corporation. He received a lifetime achievement award for work in Calibration and Testing of Remote Sensing sensors from the Space Dynamics Laboratory, Utah State University in 2018.  He is now working as a retiree casual in the areas of test and calibration, while continuing to pursue his astronomical interests. He enjoys mentoring young people coming up in his areas of expertise .

Adams ’99 will be the 2019 recipient of the Rohlf Medal, sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology and Ecology and Evolution.  Dean is professor of Evolutionary Biology at Iowa State University, where he is the director of Graduate Education and Evolutionary Biology.   He will present a lecture on October 24 as part of the Provost Lecture Series, “Morphometrics, Macroevolution and An Effect Size Measure for Multivariate Data.”

It is slated for publication by Bloomsbury in fall 2021 and was announced as a Deal of the Week by Publishers Weekly over the summer.

David Harrington MD ’90 has been working as a respiratory therapist for the past nine years at Children’s Medical Center in Washington DC and for the past year, has been working as a transport therapist with both NICU and Pediatric transport teams.  He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand from 1993 to 1995 and gained his Masters of Public Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. In 2005, he worked in Sri Lanka performing post-tsunami work on the east coast of the island nation.

Aimee Brunelle ’95 ’17 was awarded the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA): Athletic Trainer Service Award at the NATA 70th Clinical Symposia & AT Expo in Las Vegas,on June 26. The Athletic Trainer Service award (ATSA) recognizes NATA members for their contributions to the athletic training profession as a volunteer at the local and state levels. ATSA recipients have been involved in professional associations, community organizations, grassroots public relations efforts and service as a volunteer athletic trainer.  She is the first SBU grad to receive this award!

Richard E. Hart, PhD, ’84, was the recipient of the 2019 Don Ihde Distinguished Alumni Award, conferred by the Department of Philosophy at Stony Brook University. His lecture accompanying the award ceremony on April 18 was “Charles Johnson and American Pragmatism.” Johnson, an award winning author of fiction and non-fiction, also, received his PhD in philosophy from SBU. Prof. Hart is the Cyrus H. Holley Professor of Applied Ethics and Philosophy Emeritus at Bloomfield College, New Jersey. The award was presented by Dr. Ihde, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Stony Brook, and was attended by several doctoral students and friends from the mid to late 1970’s.

This nonprofit organization serves individuals with brain injury via the “clubhouse” model. The organization also advocates for individuals with brain injury and disabilities, promotes awareness and prevention. The programs and services work in conjunction with a large NJ hospital in order to research outcomes and expand the program.

Julianne Oates ’10 has been an active duty Navy nurse since graduation.  As a critical care nurse, she has been deployed twice, once with the hospital ship USNS Comfort in 2015 for a partnership mission in Latin America, and most recently last summer to the Middle East in support of the US Marines.

Lys-Claudie Perard ’16 started working at school based high school clinic, Bushwick educational complex School based health clinic/ NYC Health+ Hospital/Gotham Health, in September last year and enjoys working with adolescents. Letier Santana ’13 was recognized as one of the winners of CMYK’s “Top New Creatives 58.” Her winning campaign promoted Sunset Sarsaparilla, a western style beverage that is featured in the video game “Fallout.” She re-ignited the brand by targeting millennial festival-goers who spend money on experiences and are loyal to the brands they love. Letier, who will be graduating from the Branding + Integrated Communications Masters Program at the City College of New York this May, was guided by Professor Gerardo Blumenkrantz in BIC’s Creative Round Robin course where her campaign was seeded during a “brief and critique” at global marketing and technology agency Digitas.   CMYK magazine has recognized top student design work since 1996. After a brief hiatus, they reemerged in 2018 with their 58thissue, which recognized 70 winners and 100 projects in its “Top New Creatives 58.”   

Charles Solomon, Esq. ’68 has retired after being a judge for thirty-two years in Manhattan State Supreme Court.

Rosemary Toledo ’71, ’79 is a member of the Vineyard Community Church, Cape Coral, Florida and has also gone back to teaching. Her son, Mark is a Master Barber in New York.  She plans on being a Pastor.

Judge Michael Boyajian ’83 has written The Armenians in Paris: The Joy After the Sorrow – a book about the Armenians who survived the genocide and who came to Paris to rebuild their literary legacy in the 1920s amid the American expats like F Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, as well as authors like James Joyce.  He pays tribute to SBU P rofessors Taylor, Flanagan and Thompson in the Armenian version of Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast.

Michael Nevradakis ’05,’07 completed his doctoral studies in May, receiving his Ph.D. in Media Studies from The University of Texas at Austin.  His dissertation, titled “From the Polis to Facebook: Social Media and the Development of a New Greek Public Sphere,” was based on a long-term research project in Greece and examined social media’s impact on the public sphere, civil society and public discourse in Greece during the years of the country’s economic crisis. During this multi-year study, Nevradakis received fellowships and funding from the U.S. Fulbright Foundation, the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, the Erasmus+ Exchange Program, the Greek State Scholarships Foundation, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Furthermore, in February Nevradakis was awarded the prestigious Dissertation Fellowship by the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, one of twelve such fellowships awarded nationwide, for the completion of his research and dissertation.

Naomi Danis ’71, ’72 will be having a book coming out this May from PowKidsBooks, with illustrations by Cinta Arribas. It is her fourth picture book for kids. The book, “I Hate Everyone” is narrated by a little girl who is who is a hot mess of feelings at her birthday party. Naomi is managing editor at Lilith Magazine.

Arnold Anderson ’93, upon his 30th year of service to others, founded the non profit 501c3 Inspiring Our Youth A Game, Inc in Northeast Florida. The goal, to neutralize the effects of social and educational marginalization on elementary, middle and high school aged youth and their families. We measure our success through increasing high school graduation rates, access to college preparation, prevention of juvenile offending, enhanced health education and decreasing child welfare dependency.

James Gesualdi, Esq. ’85, an attorney in Islip, was honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Exemplary Service Award given by the New York State Bar Association Committee on Animals and the Law. He was a founding member and served as chair and vice chair during the committee’s early stages of being a “special committee,” served as chair and continues to serve as a member of the committee. He is author of “Excellence Beyond Compliance: Enhancing Animal Welfare Through the Constructive Use of the Animal Welfare Act” and has served as a special professor of law at Hofstra University School of Law where he taught Animal Law.

Harriet Hyman Alonso Ph.D. ’86 received the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Peace History Society, an affiliate of the American Historical Association. Her new book,  Martha and the Slave Catchers , a novel for Middle Grade children, was published in November by Seven Stories Press/Triangle Books for Young Readers. Thomas Koehler ’08 has signed a one year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Koehler split the 2017 season, his fifth in the majors, his 10th as a pro, between the Miami Marlins and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Larry Lewis’ ’76 first book, Sadie’s Boys , was released in December 2017. This nonfiction book tells the story of Larry’s uncles, father and grandmother during World War II, when his father survived a POW camp in Germany, his uncle Charlie was killed in 1943 serving a navigator on a B17 in the Pacific, and his grandmother, Sadie, fought to save her sons.
